These English Country Kitchens Will Completely Charm You

A folk art-style portrait and chandelier are unexpectedly pretty additions that inject whimsy. British fashion and interior designer Pearl Lowe — who is also the former singer in Britpop band Powder — was part of the infamous party crowd, the Primrose Hill set, which included the likes of Kate Moss and Jude Law. Things have calmed down a lot since Pearl relocated to Somerset 10 years ago. She and her husband, Supergrass drummer Danny Goffey, recently bought a beachside home in East Sussex and she’s unveiling her dreamy kitchen (see the whole thing here!). We’re going to share with you a mix of both old and new English country kitchens.

Bring in Personal Accents

The custom adobe-style plaster range hood calls attention to the vaulted ceiling and skylight, which stretches along the room's width and brightens everything. Cameron Schwabenton gave this kitchen a surge of energy with fun vintage pieces (those chairs!) and brass accents. The glossy dark blue cabinets are actually from IKEA—she just customized them with brass hardware. Colleen Dowd Saglimbeni of CDS interiors knew every square inch counted in this floating home in Sausalito, California.

Cupboard Range Styles

In this kitchen by Cate Dunning, glossy tiles in a herringbone pattern contrast with the matte greige painted cabinets and the dark stone counters. Marrying both, the floor tiles are a custom mosaic design reminiscent of an old-school Parisian bistro. Garrow Kedigian chose Soft Chinchilla by Benjamin Moore to give the kitchen cabinets in this Upper East Side apartment a light, cheerful energy. "I always like my kitchens to feel like rooms and not utilitarian spaces, so I always encourage my clients to paint their kitchens with a lively color," Kedigian says. Mallory Kaye modernized this ranch house's kitchen while letting the original architecture shine.

Peltier and designer Marina Kelly installed an arch to divide the bedroom from the sitting area, breaking up the large space. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12.

Wood Ceiling Beams

Decorist designer, Jessie Yoon of Casa Nolita married an updated farmhouse style with midcentury modern touches for a gorgeous kitchen that feels classic yet on trend. If space is no object, make the kitchen island the star attraction. Give it curved edges and a mix of open shelving with closed cabinets, highlight it with oversized fixtures, and add just enough seating for a casual dinner party. The kitchen in fashion designer (and Grey Gardens owner) Liz Lange's New York City home isn't large, but she wanted it to feel as bright and airy as possible. "Rather than going prewar in its aesthetic, we gutted it and went very clean and modern," she says. She coated the hardware-free cabinetry in reflective white lacquer and used white plaster paint on the backsplash, which looks unfussy and isn't too precious.

Brass kitchen hardware is another popular modern English kitchen trend. You’ll notice the brass swing arm light and brass bar pulls in this country kitchen. Copper cookware adds warmth to the space, in contrast with the marble backsplash. Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space.

ROUND CHOPPING BLOCKS ON THE ISLAND

Too narrow for a pull-out of any type…but yet too wide for a blank or filler. Custom wood serving trays, neatly integrated into your cabinetry with smart little hand cut-outs or leather handles. While these trays will be a bit on the heavy side (being made of high-quality wood), they do look gorgeous, don’t they? I see a lot of these lately, and they are almost always in a contrasting wood finish.

OPEN STORAGE

Karen Emile of Milk and Honey Life uses a rod and S-hook system to hang her most-used utensils from measuring cups to a potholder. The best way to feel confident making decisions about appliances and backsplashes is to study up. Embrace the cottagecore aesthetic and skip lower cabinet doors in favor of ruffled fabric skirts, as Meta Coleman did in this California kitchen. Skirts eliminate loud slams and broken hinges, but it's important to note that they are harder than doors to childproof. If you've been following my website for a bit, you've probably noticed that my Portfolio is predominantly made up of projects featuring the luxury cabinet brand Clive Christian. Perhaps you've seen their gorgeous advertising campaign in Architectural Digest over the years and have an interest in learning a bit more about them.

Aged Brass

If you’re not familiar with AGA, it is a classic British brand of cast-iron ranges, which are traditionally left on all day/night. There is also an add-on unit that offers gas burners and two additional conventional ovens (one of which is convection). This combination creates a 63” wide cooking experience with all of the heritage of the classic cast-iron AGA, along with the American expectation of gas burners and electric ovens. Visit AGA if you’d like to learn more about using one for your new kitchen.

As we look at the individual elements of English Kitchen design, we can see how each one contributes to that overall cozy and inviting feel. Clean and orderly, but with a warm heart, an English kitchen provides easy access to your daily scullery needs. Think Downton Abbey and their upstairs-downstairs 'back kitchens' used for servants.

Here an old side table and bench is paired with a modern AGA stove range. 'The color palette tends to feature warm neutrals to create a sense of spaciousness,' says Elizabeth Sherwin. 'Incorporate rustic touches such as mixed materials, a Belfast sink, open shelving, and hanging copper pans from hooks for the classic English look,' she adds. For a bedroom off the nursery, Carmine Sabatella wanted to create a jewel-toned escape. “I thought, if somebody’s taking care of the baby, they have a space where they can come and feel like it’s a retreat,” Sabatella says. The designer outfitted a door handcrafted in India with a vintage mirror to create a one of a kind headboard and bathed the space in deep emerald green.

Things that make a kitchen luxurious include high-end appliances like custom ranges and oven hoods, top-of-the-line refrigerators, and extras like built-in wine storage. A luxury kitchen will also have high-end, custom finishes and custom built-in cabinetry, with flawless craftsmanship and an attention to detail on everything from the choice of wall tile to cabinet hardware. Bespoke lighting ranging from illuminated glass-front display cabinetry to pendant lights and sconces also enhance the luxury feel.

The glamorous touches continue in the ensuite bath, where Sabatella added a custom mirror-tiled tub that plays off the vintage French tile floor. If you want to incorporate a bold color but are fearful it'll be too much, take a cue from this kitchen. The orange interiors of these pendant lights provide just the right amount of pop. A sleek wood island and simple cabinetry help ground the colorful, patterned space.
